Wykon Family & Friends:

To help protect Michigan families – particularly children – from the tragedies of gun violence and unintentional firearms injuries, a secure storage gun law (MCL 28.435 Public Act 17 of 2023) requires secure storage of firearms has gone into effect.  This new law requires individuals to keep unattended weapons unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a lockbox or container if it is reasonably known that a minor is likely to be present on the premises. The law also requires all schools to share this information with families by October 1st. "We want to make sure Michigan families are aware of the new law designed to prevent unintentional deaths involving guns and how to comply with the new requirements,” said Elizabeth Hertel, MDHHS director. Please see the following documents that we are required to share from the State of Michigan that explain safe storage practices and provide guidance to help ensure firearms are secured properly, reducing the risk of accidental injury.  Ensuring the safety of our students and community is a shared responsibility.
