Dear Wykon Parents & Staff,

Last night, January 22, 2025, West Iron County Schools was informed by Iron River Police Chief of some threatening comments posted on social media by an adult community member, regarding children in our community.  Our schools were never mentioned in the social media posts.  This report initiated a multi-agency investigation.  The cooperating agencies began immediately to investigate the potential threat.

The person who was accused of making the threatening comments was taken into police custody last night.

The safety and security of our students, staff, and community is of utmost importance to us.  Therefore, we were prepared to cancel school if necessary. However, thanks to the quick and decisive action of our local agencies, closing school today was not necessary due to the individual being taken into custody.

We are very thankful for the actions of the local law enforcement agencies.  This cooperation enabled us to respond proactively to the potential threat in our community, and plan accordingly to ensure it was safe to open school today.

WICS is very fortunate to have a full time School Resource Officers located on campus everyday. We will all continue to take necessary measures to ensure our school campus is safe, orderly, and secure.

We appreciate your support and cooperation as we work through challenging circumstances.

Sincerely,

Mr. Kevin Schmutzler, Superintendent
